Mitsubishi Electric Corp. will stop developing and making cellular phone handsets due to falling profitability in the mature domestic market. Instead, it plans to concentrate on priority areas such as products related to next-generation telecommunications networks and the security system business.
It cancelled its planned sale of a new model this spring and will continue service work such as repairing already sold handsets and collecting battery packs.
It also plans to reallocate 600 workers, mainly at its handset production base in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, to other business sections.
