The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) announced that its performance evaluation procedure for household refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers, and freezers has gained approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard. The ANSI approved standard will be known as the ANSI/AHAM HRF-1-2007, Energy, Performance and Capacity of Household Refrigerators, Refrigerator-Freezers and Freezers.

The standard supersedes the 2004 edition and contains methods for computing total volume, volume of special features and shelf area; energy consumption and energy factor of household refrigerators, household wine chillers, and household freezers; performance test procedures and recommended levels of performance; durability and condensate test procedures; and safety of household refrigerators, household wine chillers, and household freezers. Results of tests in accordance with the standard may be publicly stated.

The revised standard contains an insertion which clarifies how the test method is intended to be used in order to provide an accurate energy calculation. It specifies that conditions which occur in a typical home should be simulated during the energy test.

In addition, AHAM formally requested that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) incorporate the AHAM language into its refrigerator and freezer test procedures as a clarification of how the products energy use should be measured. DOE has already indicated it will incorporate the language in its Energy Star program for refrigerator-freezers in 2008.

AHAM's HRF-1 Task Force, which is responsible for updating the standard, has commenced a new revision cycle for the newly accredited standard. The Task Force will be looking at compartment testing temperatures, the method of calculating volume, and the incorporation of hybrid products into the next standard, which is not expected to be available until late 2008.

The ANSI/AHAM-HRF-1-2007 standard and all other AHAM performance standards are available for purchase at http://www.aham.org/ht/d/Store/name/MAJOR.
