Sanyo Batteries in Mobile Phones Recalled in Japan Dec 8, 2006

According to a report from Reuters, NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan's top mobile phone operator, said it would recall 1.3 million mobile-phone batteries made by Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. because they may overheat and rupture.

The recall comes to Sanyo after it warned last month that it would fall into the red for the third straight year in 2006/07 amid weak sales of digital cameras and mobile phones.

Sanyo is the world's largest maker of lithium-ion batteries.

The batteries in question were made before May 2006 for Mitsubishi Electric Corp.'s FOMA D902i handsets sold in Japan.

DoCoMo and Mitsubishi Electric reported one known case of a battery rupture. No one was injured in the incident in November.
