EU Announces Dumping Duties for South Korean Refrigerators Nov 1, 2006

The European Union (EU) announced 5-year anti-dumping duties for some refrigerators made in South Korea, in a case that has drawn protests from leading appliance makers. According to a Reuters report, U.S.-based Whirlpool and European manufacturers Electrolux and BSH protested at a Commission decision to exclude three-door “side-by-side” refrigerators from the dumping probe. The EU’s Executive Commission will levy duties of 3.4 and 12.2 percent on two-door “side-by-side” fridges, with fresh-food and freezer compartments beside one another, made respectively by Daewoo Electronics and LG Electronics. The duties went into effect on Sept. 1, 2006.
The report said there will be no punitive
tariff for Samsung Electronics Corporation, which was also investigated. Earlier this year, the Commission introduced provisional anti-dumping duties, and in June it recommended the 5-year tariffs. In mid-July, EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson decided the tariffs should apply to two-door models and not to three-door refrigerators.
