Toshiba Corp. plans to expand manufacturing of household appliances and consumer electronics in Brazil and may also begin producing chips in the country if trade laws make the practice cost-effective.

The company is studying the expansion of existing appliance plants in Brazil or construction of a new manufacturing center. The plan, intended to help the company tap growing demand, will go into effect as early as next year.

The Sao Paulo-based company may expand existing factories in the cities of Manaus, Salvador or Sao Paulo. Semp Toshiba also is in talks with state governments throughout Brazil to scout for possible locations. (Bloomberg.com)
