Dale Gargiulo, a kitchen designer with The Kitchen Shop in Pelham, New York, U.S., was the grand prize winner in the Sharp Insight Pro Microwave Drawer Kitchen Design Contest. Gargiulo and other contest winners were awarded at a cocktail reception on Tuesday evening during the 2007 Kitchen/Bath Industry Show.

The contest ran from July 2006 through March 2007 and recognized professional kitchen designers for creative and visually appealing kitchen designs incorporating Insight Microwave Drawers. Three top designers, along with the homeowners of the winning kitchens, received Sharp Aquos Liquid Crystal Televisions, while designers awarded an honorable mention received a Sharp Insight Pro Microwave Drawer.

Gargiulo's multi-zone kitchen was designed for an active cook who prefers to work alone and undisturbed in preparing meals. The kitchen features two work triangles - one for the homeowner to cook in and one for others in the household to make breakfast, lunch and snacks. The microwave drawer is the centerpiece of this work zone, positioned under the breakfast countertop and next to the eating area.

Other winners included:

  • First place - Nancy Hugo, Nancy Hugo CKD, Glendale, Arizona
  • Second place - Greg Armstrong, Genesis Innovations, Loveland, Colorado
  • Honorable mention - Bill Popp, Lowe's, Neptune Beach, Florida
  • Honorable mention - Jeremy Bauer, Bauer/Clifton Interiors, Juneau, Alaska

Contest winners were chosen by a panel of professors from Virginia Tech’s Center for Real Life Kitchen Design, including Associate Professor Dr. JoAnn Emmel, Professor and Certified Kitchen Design Educator Dr. Kathleen Parrott, and Professor and Certified Kitchen Design Educator Dr. Julia Beamish.

"The Microwave Drawer offers as many unique placement options as there are unique homeowner needs," said Dr. Emmel. "We at the Center for Real Life Kitchen Design feel the concept of a microwave drawer will continue to grow as more households and designers discover the many benefits of this microwave placement alternative."
