AHAM Washer Performance Standard Gains ANSI Approval May 8, 2007

A performance evaluation procedure for clothes washers that was developed by the Washington, D.C.-based Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) has gained approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard. The ANSI approved standard will be known as the ANSI/AHAM HLW-1-2007, Performance Evaluation Procedure for Household Clothes Washers. AHAM is an accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) through ANSI.

The new standard supersedes the 2001 edition, with test procedures to measure specific performance characteristics of any brand or model of household clothes washers. Substantive changes include the removal of the whiteness retention and rinsing effectiveness tests.  A new rinsing effectiveness test is being developed and will be issued as a supplement to the 2007 edition. A new version of the whiteness retention test will be developed for a future edition of the standard.
