Sony Europe yesterday introduced the Walkman NW-S200 series of digital audio players for active users. The unit is constructed in a seamless aluminum shell, intended to give the unit a sleek look as well as light weigh and water-resistance. The unit is designed to withstand water splashes from wet hands, perspiration or outdoor use, even in wet or snowy weather conditions. The stick & ring design in silver, pink or black is made for stylish visual appeal.

Speed charge capability provides 3 hours of continuous music playback time after a 3-minute charge. The unit can be fully charged in 45 minutes, providing 18 hours of continuous playback.

Electronic features include a Music Pacer(TM) to detect the user’s pace of step and change the music accordingly from pre-made play lists. The Shuffle Shake function lets a user alternate quickly between shuffle and normal playback modes by shaking the unit three times.

Sony says the unit's product intelligence support its sports counter functions. Using an integral gravity sensor and simple jog dial shuttle operating the graphical user interface (GUI), the unit monitors real-time calorie usage, distance traveled, steps taken, and running time. Users no longer need to carry a separate pedometer or stopwatch. The user can set personal targets for each exercise session, so music stops at the end of a specific time period, calories have been expended or distance has been traveled.

Sony says the unit supports all major codecs, including MP3, Atrac and non-DRM WMA and AAC files.

“It’s been almost 30 years since Sony launched the iconic Walkman, and the Walkman NW-S200 series represents its latest reincarnation, the first of a new generation of intelligent digital music players which are robust, lightweight and packed with features, yet look stylish and sleek for everyday use,” said Jeffry van Ede, Vice President, Sony Audio Marketing Europe.

The unit will be available at retail across Europe in September.
