APPLIANCE magazine was on-hand Monday for the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., where AHAM honored several industry executives with awards for service and leadership.

AHAM's top honor is the Home Appliance Industry Leadership (HAIL) Award, which went to Liston P. Durden, senior vice president of marketing for Viking Range Corporation and David B. Sunset, senior director of market development, Jarden Consumer Solutions.

Liston Durden is a well-known figure at AHAM and in the appliance industry – so much so, in fact, that he was referred to as the "face of AHAM." He has served as the AHAM chairman, continues to serve on the board and is currently chair of the AHAM Major Appliance Division. The HAIL award also recognized his involvement in the development of the ANSI/AHAM OV-1, test method for measurement of oven volume.

David Sunset has served as chair of the Portable Appliance Division's Business Data Council since 2001 and led council efforts to replace the portable appliance shipment data program with a more robust consumer panel data program.
The Michael C. Thompson Public Policy Award recognizes extraordinary effort and accomplishment in public policy, and is presented every other year when AHAM holds its annual member meetings in Washington, D.C. The 2007 award went to Lynn H. Thomson, manager of government relations, GE. The award recognized her efforts in the successful enactment of the manufacturers tax credit for super efficient appliances, and her other contributions to AHAM's advocacy agenda in her 4 years with the association.

The Chairman's Award recognizes significant contributions by non-members. The 2007 Chairman's Award went to Joseph R. Musso, chairman of the Standards Technical Panel for Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Musso was recognized for fostering a cooperative relationship with the home appliance industry and encouraging AHAM member company participation in the UL standards process. Musso serves as chair to more than twenty AHAM-related STP's.

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes significant contributions by virtue of longevity and quality of service to AHAM and the home appliance industry. This year's Distinguished Service Award recipients were:

  • Jennifer Moe, section head for Global Fabric Enhancer Formula Design, Proctor & Gamble
  • Gary Chastine, senior engineer, GE Consumer & Industrial
  • Raymon D. Mayginnes, Chief Product Engineer, Emerson Tool Company

Moe and Chastine were both recognized for their technical leadership in development of AHAM's rinsing effectiveness test method of ANSI/AHAM-HLW-1, performance measurement for clothes washers. Mayginnes was recognized for his leadership as chairman of the Floor Care Engineering Council and active involvement in the Portable Appliance Engineering Council.
