Osaka, Japan based Panasonic (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.) said its business unit Panasonic Vietnam Co., Ltd. (PV) began operations at two manufacturing facilities and began operating an R&D subsidiary in Hanoi last week.

Panasonic Vietnam held grand opening ceremonies for two new manufacturing operations. Panasonic Communications Vietnam Co., Ltd. produces high-tech electric and electronic products such as PBXs and an optical disk driver and has about 300 employees. Panasonic Electronic Devices Vietnam Co., Ltd., produces tuners, encoders and speakers with about 500 employees. Most products from both companies are exported. The operations are expected to continue expanding and the number of employees is expected to reach about 8,000 by 2009.

Both operations are located in the Thang Long Industrial Park, Dong Anh district in Hanoi. Both facilities were constructed in 2006 and recently started up.

Shinya Abe, general director of Panasonic Vietnam, said Vietnam is considered key to Panasonic's success worldwide. "We anticipate rapid economic growth of the country because of Vietnam's membership of The World Trade Organization."

Panasonic R&D Center Vietnam Co., Ltd. (PRDCV) was opened with a capital investment of U.S. $500,000, the center increases the number of R&D bases that the global Panasonic Group has in the ASEAN region. PRDCV's R&D activities will encompass digital home appliances and design and development of software. The Center is certified as an R&D company by the Vietnamese government.

"Through our PRDCV activities, and our collaboration with Hanoi University of Technology, we hope to contribute to higher student achievements. Integrating with other Panasonic Group companies in Vietnam, we also hope to play an important role in the country's R&D activities," said Kazuhiro Tsuga, executive officer of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. in charge of Digital Network & Software Technology and Overseas R&D Centers.
