3M Files Battery Patent Infringement Suit Mar 12, 2007

3M Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.) filed patent infringement suits in U.S. District Court and in the U.S. International Trade Commission alleging infringement of patents directed to lithium ion battery cathode materials.

Named defendants include battery maker Sony Corporation, PC OEM Lenovo Group Ltd., battery maker Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., and others.

3M’s complaints allege that the defendants import or sell lithium ion batteries, or products using lithium ion batteries, with cathode components that infringe 3M’s patent rights.

Rechargeable lithium ion batteries have emerged as a leading battery technology in portable electronics due to light weight, high energy density and long life.
