Euro PS3 Plays Fewer Old Games

According to BBC News, Sony announced that the European PlayStation 3 model will play fewer old games than the U.S. and Japanese versions.

The European PS3, due to go on sale March 23, has a different design from its U.S. and Japanese counterparts, which will not accommodate some games originally manufactured for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation, reports BBC News.

The European PS3 utilizes a new design in which software takes over the functionality that was previously accomplished via dedicated chips. This results in a limiting in the unit’s “backwards compatibility,” its ability to play the games made for the other two systems. While the European PS3 will be able to play many games manufactured for PlayStation, it will be very limited in its ability to play the games manufactured for PlayStation 2, said BBC News.
