LG.Philips LCD, one of the world's largest makers of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new back-end module production plant in Wroclaw, Poland. The project was big enough to draw the Polish Prime Minister, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, to the event. Also in attendance were LG.Philips LCD Vice Chairman and CEO Bon Joon Koo, Wroclaw Mayor Rafal Dutkiewicz and Kobierzyce Commune Mayor Ryszard Pacholik.

The new plant is part of the display-maker's strategy of creating a global manufacturing network that places the technology-intensive front-end production of TFT-LCD panels in Korea while back-end module production and assembly takes place closer to customers.

LG.Philips plans to start large-scale production at the plant in March of 2007, with an initial annual capacity of 3 million modules. The company intends for the plant to reach its design capacity of 11 million units per year by 2011.

According to research firm DisplaySearch, Europe is the world’s largest market for LCD TVs, with a 41-percent market share in 2005 (based on units), placing it ahead of Japan and North America. DisplaySearch expects the European LCD TV market to record a compound annual growth rate of 29.6 percent from 2005, generating three-fold growth by 2009.
