Hong Kong's average household expenditure went down 13 percent in the last 5 years, according to a survey published Thursday.
The drop was attributed partly to the price deflation in most of the 5-year period from 1999-2000 to 2004-05 and partly to the fall in the average household size, said the survey conducted by the Census & Statistics Department of Hong Kong.
The average household expenditure in the past 2 years is 18,884 Hong Kong dollars (approx. U.S. $2,432) per month with housing and food together accounting for 56 percent of the total expenditure.
The other categories with relatively significant proportions were services and transport, while electricity, gas and water accounted for 3 percent.
