Sony Merges LCD TV Chemical Businesses May 18, 2006

Sony Corporation (Tokyo) will merge two of its companies with the intent to strengthen the chemical component business for LCD TV. On July 1, Sony Chemicals Corporation and Sony Miyagi Corporation will be merged into a single company, Sony Chemical & Information Device Corporation.

The move comes after Sony Corp.'s May 1 establishment of an internal organization, the Chemical Device Business Group.

Sony Chemical & Information Device Corp. will aim to expand its business by merging Sony Chemicals' chemical technologies and Sony Miyagi's material and process technologies, which have been developed through the recording media business. The new company will have a special focus on chemical products like functional film development, which is expected to lead to expanded applications in LCD panel modules for Sony's Bravia LCD TV and low temperature poly-silicon LCD modules. Sony hopes to support higher product competitiveness through vertical integration of equipment and components.
