Iowa State Governor Tom Vilsack went today in Benton Harbor, Michigan, U.S., to Whirlpool Corporation headquarters, for a face-to-face with CEO Jeff Fettig. Vilsack made the case for keeping manufacturing, and jobs, in Iowa.

Whirlpool acquired Maytag Corporation last month, including the Maytag headquarters and laundry appliances plant in Newton, Iowa, as well as Amana appliance plants. Amana was purchased by Maytag in 2001 and was part of the Whirlpool acquisition.

It's not the first time the governor met with Whirlpool to promote the benefits of keeping manufacturing in his state.

“There are compelling reasons for doing business in Iowa and state officials are continuing to promote our great business climate to Whirlpool executives,” Vilsack said in a statement in mid-April. “We appreciate the opportunity to discuss a long-term strategy for fostering successful Whirlpool operations in our state and we will do our best to ensure the best results for the people of Iowa.”

Whirlpool said it is evaluating all its operations, including Maytag and Whirlpool, by standards of "best cost, best quality for products and markets served," and has been sharing information with the Governor's office.

Whirlpool has said several times that it will announce its first major decisions about the structure of the combined companies 60 days from the date the acquisition closed, which would be about May 1.
