Sony Sales Up, Profits Down In Fiscal 2006 Apr 28, 2006

Sony Corporation (Tokyo) reported net income for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2006, of 123.6 billion yen (approx. $1.1 billion), down 24.5 percent compared to its 2005 net income of 163.8 billion yen (approx. $1.4 billion).

The company reported 2006 sales and operating revenue of 7,475.4 billion yen (approx. U.S. $65.4 billion), or 4.4 percent more than 2005 sales and operating revenue of 7,159.6 billion yen (approx. $62.66 billion).

Sales in the Electronics segment of Sony's business were up 1.7 percent. Sales were down in some product categories, including CRT TVs and plasma TVs, while sales of LCD and LCD rear projection TVs were up.

In the Games segment of its business, Sony said sales of the PlayStation(R) Portable helped push up sales by 31.4 percent.
