New Wal-Mart Chief Information Officer Rollin Ford reiterated yesterday that the world's biggest retailer will continue exploring the supply chain benefits of using radio frequency identification (RFID).

Ford strongly endorsed RFID technology at the biannual CIO summit, hosted by Wal-Mart on Wednesday in Bentonville, Arkansas, U.S., where the retail company is based. Ford told the audience of CIOs that logistics and information systems strategies were central to Wal-Mart's competitive advantage.

Ford said he intended to build on the success of his predecessor, Linda Dillman. Ford became executive vice president and CIO when Dillman was named executive vice president of risk management and benefits administration at Wal-Mart.

"Like Linda, I view RFID as a strategy that offers tremendous competitive advantage," Ford said.

Wal-Mart Phases Out EPC Gen 1 Standard
Ford reaffirmed the company's commitment to the EPC standard and said he was impressed with the step change in performance the company had seen through the use of the EPC Gen 2 standard. "When Gen 2 was released we planned to make it our standard at the beginning of this year," Ford said. "We have done that, and I can confirm that we will be sunsetting Gen 1 on June 30."

"RFID will transform the way we do business, and I am privileged to be a part of this technology that is bringing positive change to Wal-Mart, the retail industry and many other sectors as well," Ford said.
