Sanyo, Quanta In Flat Panel Venture Mar 20, 2006

Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. and Quanta Computer Inc. plan a joint venture company to make and sell Sanyo-brand flat panel TVs. The new company will also continue to expand Quanta’s flat panel TV original design manufacturing (ODM) business.

Sanyo (Osaka, Japan) currently makes and sells 6.5 million TVs worldwide every year, and has major operations in Japan, the U.S., Europe, China, Indonesia, and India. Quanta (Taipei, Taiwan) is a leading provider of IT products with over 30-percent world production share of notebook PCs, and recently expanded into flat panel TVs.

The move is seen as a part of Sanyo's restructuring efforts. The new joint venture will leverage the strengths of both companies by bringing together Sanyo and Quanta research and development teams and some manufacturing sites, as well as maintain access to Sanyo’s global sales and service network. Sanyo indicated the TVs will be manufactured at Quanta's China facility.

The venture will seek to provide benefits from increased economies of scale, standardized product platforms and shared technology.
