Victoria, Australian-based Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. designed the BlueGen to be a modular fuel cell generator that can be configured to suit different installations. This is intended to make the unit usable in regions that require an alternative product approach to fully-integrated "European style" systems, such as Japan, Northern America, and Australia. It can be installed as a mono-generation (power only) unit or as a co-generation (power and heat) unit. The Gennex fuel cell module in the BlueGen is a grid-parallel solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system that operates on natural gas. Output is up to 2 kW power export and efficiency is up to 60% (net AC export).
