iRobot (Burlington, MA, U.S.), maker of the Roomba robotic vacuum for the home, took a new cleaning approach when engineering a cleaner for the workshop. Instead of a vacuum, the Dirt Dog uses two 1000-rpm counter-rotating bristle brushes to clean garage, basement, patio, deck, and other industrial surfaces. The brushes and heavier wheels are intended to withstand and clean the kind of debris found in these environments: nails, wood chips, and small shop scraps. In fact, the company recommends the unit only for hard floors, shop carpets, and industrial surfaces. www.irobot.com
