Photocatalytic Substrate

Quartzel®, a photocatalytic substrate, can be used in air purification systems ranging from stand alone air purifiers and induct HVAC residential units, to large building systems. Using a process known as photocatalysis, the substrate destroys air pollutants and is said to have a real effect on ozone reduction. Photocatalysis uses a UV light and TiO2 semiconductor on the substrate to create a hydroxyl radical from the water present in the air. Hydroxyl has twice the power of chlorine in destroying organic molecules and converts the organic molecules into basic molecules such as CO2 and H2O. Using the oxidizing power of the hydroxyl radical, air purification systems can destroy VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) that are normally difficult to destroy, such as halogenated organics, surfactants, herbicides, and pesticides.
