The company says its A3979 motor drive is a complete microstepping motor driver with a built-in translator for easy operation. The driver is designed to operate bipolar stepper motors in full-, half-, quarter- and 16-step modes with output drive capability of 35 V and +/-2.5 A, and is a drop-in replacement for the company's A3977SLP with 16 microstep/step resolution. The two-input STEP and DIRECTION interface of the driver is said to make it ideal for applications with multiple motors that would normally push the I/O capability of most µP controllers. Internal synchronous rectification control circuitry is included in the driver to improve power dissipation during PWM operation. The power dissipation savings (typically greater than 20 percent) will reportedly result in lower temperature rise and eliminate the need for external Schottky diodes. Allegro MicroSystems, Inc.
