Haydon Switch & Instrument, Inc. has introduced its new high-force Size 14 hybrid external linear actuator, the latest addition to its growing hybrid motor line. The rotating stainless steel acme lead screw is incorporated into the motor’s rotor. According to the company, shaft-to-lead screw couplings are not needed with this design, thus saving time, money, and labor during assembly into the final application. The company’s new external linear actuator is said to replace four different components—a motor, coupling, lead screw, and nut.
The company says the nut on the external linear actuator uses the same high-performance engineering thermoplastics as the rotor drive nut of its non-captive and captive designs. This feature reportedly ensures trouble-free, exceptional long-life operation for use in high-precision applications. The external linear hybrid actuator is available in a variety of resolutions ranging from 0.00012 to 0.00192 in (0.003048 to 0.048768 mm) per step and delivers thrusts of up to 50 lb (23 Kg), reportedly without compromising long life or cost. While a standard size 14 external linear has 4 in of visible lead screw, the company says lead-screw length, coil termination, and the external nut can be customized to fit a customer’s application requirements.
The company says that in the new design, the lead screw is an integral part of the motor with a mating nut translating along the screw. As the motor steps, the lead screw rotates but does not advance. This is said to be the best overall design approach for obtaining linear travel in confined spaces. The lead screw end can be machined to allow the use of out-board bearing support for long lead screw lengths.
Applications requiring precise positioning and rapid motion are best suited for the motor. Typical applications include medical equipment, automation of any kind, and valve control.
