De’Longhi SpA (Treviso, Italy) showcased its new automatic espresso coffee maker, Magnifica, at HomeTech. Based on the company’s CRF (compact, reliable, fresh) technology, the machine’s integrated burr grinder grinds the coffee beans necessary for each cup and transports the freshly-ground coffee directly to the brewing unit—without the use of a large tube. According to Alvise Ricoveri, export area manager, this is necessary to ensure that the coffee produced is exactly what the user requested. “The advantage is that you’re not getting any of the remnants that can remain in the tubes,” he explains. “With ground coffee that sits in the tube, you are not brewing your cup of coffee, but the coffee the person before you requested. That defeats the whole purpose of freshly-brewed espresso.” The unit can also brew previously ground coffee.

In addition to the “tubeless” feature, the appliance uses a patented boiler, which is completely removable, allowing users to easily clean the brewing unit and other parts of the machine that are usually hard to access. The water filter is also removable. An instant reheat option heats the core of the machine and is said to ensure that the appliance maintains the ideal temperature for espresso brewing, no matter how long ago it was used.

Additional features include a cup warmer located on top of the machine and adjustable coffee spigots to allow for different cup sizes. The front panel includes several functions for customizing each cup of coffee.

The Magnifica was introduced to the European market in January 2004 and will be launched in the U.S. in July.
