The Proton R5A digital FM/AM atomic clock radio offers high-fidelity sound, digital tuning, and 20 station presets (10 FM/10 AM) plus the time accuracy of the U.S. Atomic Clock, said to be the most advanced clock in the world. The split-second timelines of the radio-controlled clock is achieved though a pre-tuned internal radio receiver that responds to a special time-setting signal generated by the U.S. Atomic Clock, which is operated by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology. Along with alarm clock duties, the R5A is said to be distinguished in the area of audio fidelity. A 5-W amplifier and a high-quality, full-range 5-in (127-mm) speaker are said to deliver rich, full sound at virtually any volume level. Separate bass and treble controls further tailor the sound. The Proton R5A's dual alarms may be programmed for either music or buzzer. To assure a gentle waking, the volume of the radio or alarm rises gradually to its preset level over a 1-min period. A snooze function allows for an extra 7 min of sleep. The Proton RSA's easy-to-read digital FL display features an automatic light sensor, which adjusts display brightness to compensate for ambient light. A battery back-up system protects the R5A against power failure, holding current time and alarm settings in the unit's memory until power is restored.
