Padova, Italy-based 4P Mobile Data Processing introduced the DAT500 All-In-One hand-held computer at Comdex Fall in Las Vegas, NV, U.S., in November 2002. The unit is designed for continuous wireless connections for field workers, in any location, and at very low costs.
The unit features a large color display with touch screen and handwriting recognition, as well as an input keyboard with navigation key for easy use.
Built-in GSM/GPRS phone/modem functionality allows for data, voice, and two-way text messaging communication.
This hand-held computer makes it possible for a user to:
log-in to the corporate network
browse Internet pages
exchange e-mail
run Internet-based applications or thin clients
The GPRS cellular connection is designed to be innovative and attractive: users pay only for the exchanged data bytes and not for air-time. This Always-On capability allows the field workforce to stay connected to their corporate network.
This ruggedized unit was designed by 4P Mobile Data Processing to offer performance in extreme conditions:
operating temperature: 0°C to 50°C (32°F to 122°F)
storage temperature: -30°C to 70°C (-22°F to 158°F)
relative humidity: 0 to 80 percent non condensing
dust and water resistance
drop resistance: 1 m (3.3 ft) on concrete
The DAT500 GPRS with color display also features:
touch screen
keyboard
printer
two CF card slots,
barcode reader
two smart card reader/writers
magnetic card reader
RFID interface for contactless cards and RF-Tags
IrDA infrared port
cellular phone/modem
The backlit, customizable keyboard has 19 numeric and functional push-button keys.
The 240x320 pixel (4-in VGA) transflective LCD display is backlit and has adjustable contrast. It has a stylus with a housing in the printer cover.
Internal memory includes RAM plus Flash ROM, and add-on memory can be Flash or RAM PCMCIA cards.
The unit features programmable RS232 communication and a baud rate of up to 115 kbit/s.
The power supply includes a quickly replaceable and rechargeable battery pack, as well as an internal rechargeable back-up battery for SRAM and clock calendar backup. An alert warns users of low battery power.
Built-In Printer
The built-in printer uses fan-fold or roll paper and features auto-alignment for fan fold sheets. It has an internal paper housing. It uses:
fan fold paper standard size 57 x 152 mm (2.25 in x 6 in)
roll paper size 28 mm (1.1 in) or 35 mm (1.37 in) external diameter, 57 mm (2.25 in) width
Bar-Code Scanning
The bar code scanner is optional and operates with a depth of field of 7 to 110 cm (2.5 in to 43.3 in), depending on barcode length and density. Long range and very high density capabilities are also available. Bar code scanning specifications include:
Scanning rate: 36 scans/s (1-D)
Class 2 (Class 1 optional)
1-D bar codes: UPC/EAN, Code 39, Code 93, Interleaved 2 of 5, Discrete 2 of 5, USS-128, UCC/EAN 128, ISBT-128
2-D bar codes: PDF417
Other standards are also supported and further information is available form the producer.
Magnetic card reader, Smart card reader/writer, and IRDA interface components are also optional.
Ergonomics & Ease-Of-Use
A detachable back strap allows an easy and comfortable hand grip even in the most inconvenient locations.
The unit is designed to maximize operator comfort and convenience, with all components inside the compact, light-weight case of the same machine. This reduces risk of failures due to loose or detachable parts. Using a single ruggedized body means the total weight for the operator is reduced, benefit particularly appreciated by workers in difficult ambient conditions.
The most common applications are:
field services
sales force automation
route accounting
parcel dispatching
mobile fare collection
mobile sales onboard aircraft and trains
parking payment
fine issuing
door to door delivery
utility meter reading
