PORTAL GOLD MEDIALINK SET-TOP BOX

In September 2002 Ong Corporation began shippings the new Portal Gold MediaLinkā„¢, a scalable and completely customizable set-top box (STB). In its first installation, Portal Gold Medialinks form the core of the entertainment systems on a custom yacht belonging to a well-known sports figure. On the yacht, the boxes provide movies on demand in 12 staterooms.

"MediaLink represents the final footprint that dedicated, point-of-presence ISP's have been missing to realize revenue that was never before available," says company president Lance Ong. "It also works seamlessly with our other products like Media on Demand, WaveTrace and CashClik. The result is a complete affordable system capable of delivering richer content to more clients over lower bandwidth, including secure content management to facilitate any type of business model."

MediaLink utilizes Sigma Designs new chipset for MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 decoding and Tvia's 5350 display chip for 3D graphics. The product's new fan-less design and small footprint are also said to make it ideal for Video on Demand (VOD) and related media applications. MediaLink has also been tested for use in the biometrics, kiosk and the medical industries.

Portal Gold MediaLink also presents a price/performance advantage over other units. While most STBs incorporate features that drive prices upwards of U.S. $750, MediaLink costs just $450 and is designed in such a way that the company can add or eliminate features in accordance with customers' application requirements.

Medialink comes standard with:

  • 2 USB ports
  • serial port
  • Ethernet port
  • audio in/out
  • S-Video
  • composite video
  • microphone input for videoconferencing.

Facilitating easy expansion, the unit also contains
  • a PCI slot
  • two mini PCI slots
  • a Compact Flash connector
  • an IDE hard drive connector
  • S/PDIF header for stereo digital audio output
  • expandable memory.

If a customer has a project requiring a WiFi or wireless connection, for example, Ong Corporation can add a standard device to the mini PCI slot that facilitates that need. Other options such as a 56K modem, and analog TV or HDTV tuner can also be added easily at costs reflecting only the options needed.
