Overview
End-of-year data is beginning to confirm an overall disappointing year for the U.S. major appliance industry in terms of unit shipments, while vigorous cost-cutting by the appliance companies is essentially resizing company operations to fill the needs of the North American market.
Major appliance unit shipments in december 2011 Statistics from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) show that unit shipments in the core group of major appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges, and ovens) were up 2.7%.

electric cooking appliance (ranges, ovens, and surface cooking) unit shipments were up 4.6%
gas cooking appliance unit shipments were up 2.2%
microwave ovens were up 2.1%
freezers were up 21.2%
refrigerators were up 4.9%
gas and electric dryers were up 3.2%
automatic washers were down 0.4%
dishwashers were down 3.1%
