Overview
Total 2010 shipments for the core five appliances (refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers, and dishwashers) were up 7% from 2009. The total shipments for the core eight appliances – adding microwaves, cooktops, and freezers – increased 5.3% to 6.9 million units from 2009's 6.6 million units.
Canadian residential air-conditioning, commercial air-conditioning, and furnace shipments generated steady increases in unit shipments in 2010 and 2011. Commercial air-conditioning produced 38,778 unit shipments in 2010; this number increased 1% in 2011 to 39,113 units. Residential air-conditioners generated a larger growth with a 14% increase in unit shipments from 2010 to 2011, ending 2011 with 223,471 units.
Due to Canada's proximity to the U.S. and the social and cultural similarities, the appliance industry has become increasingly homogenous across the border. These markets are very similar in terms of consumer needs, usage habits and expectations, safety standards, and voluntary energy efficiency standards. This results in the appliance industry creating standardized products for both Canada and the U.S. markets, differentiated only by labeling and documentation.
