Overview

Unit shipments during September for the core group of major appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges, and ovens) increased nearly 2% compared to STLY for the first positive growth month since April. Categories with the most activity were freezers, up 15.7%, and washers, down 8.4%.

Unit shipments during January-September 2011 for the core group of major appliances declined nearly 3% when compared to STLY. Declines impacted most categories including gas and electric dryers, down 6.5%. Microwaves bucked this downward trend with reported increased shipments of 2.7%.

The HVAC segment generated a mixed performance for August. Central air-conditioners, air-source heat pumps, and commercial electric water heaters produced increased unit shipments while gas and oil warm air furnaces, residential gas and electric water heaters, and commercial gas water heaters decreased compared to STLY. Central air-conditioners had the most positive growth, up 23.7%.

Central air-conditioners, air-source heat pumps, and commercial electric water heaters were the only categories to generate growth during the first 8 months of 2011 when compared to STLY.
