The digital video disk (DVD) player market is growing rapidly and today nearly 800,000 units of the product are sold in the organized market annually. |
Philips India, the subsidiary of the Netherlands-based Philips Electronics, has captured nearly 52 percent of the organized market.
The company, which sold just around 40,000 units in 2003, reported unit sales of 500,000 in 2004. Aggressive pricing has been key to Philips’ success. By pricing the devices at Rs 4,000 (approx. $92), the company has been able to convert existing users of Video Compact Disks (VCDs) into DVD users.
Zenith Finnesse India Pvt Ltd has tied up with Goldyip Holdings of China to launch a new range of audio-visual electronic appliances, including 6-in-1 DVD players and cassette recorders, in the domestic market, under the brand name “Finesse.” The Finesse DVD products are priced in the Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000 range (approx. $69 to $139).
