The Portrait of the U.S. Appliance Industry is an annual statistical report based on unit factory shipments that covers U.S. appliance share of market, life expectancy/replacement picture, household saturation, and the Who's Who of the Appliance Industry. Revenue information is not included.

The Share-of-Market Picture for 2004
The Share-of-Market Picture represents an attempt to ascertain market positioning of competitors by product category based on analysis of unit manufacturing and/or retail brand dominance in the U.S. marketplace. In many cases, private label production is noted for the OEM of the units. However, because specific percentages of private label production by manufacturer in some categories is often difficult (if not impossible) to uncover, the units (and, hence, the market shares) are attributed to the marketers/brands associated with the retail marketplace. Following each product heading are unit shipments for 2004 and a comparison year. These figures were gathered from surveys of appliance OEMs, industry suppliers, market analysts, confidential sources, and APPLIANCE magazine estimates.

Life Expectancy/Replacement Picture

In this study, we have listed the estimated low, high, and average years of life expectancy. Life expectancy is based on first-owner use of the product and does not necessarily mean the appliance is worn out. When a replacement is purchased, the old unit is either traded in, relegated to use elsewhere, given away, or discarded, thereby ending the life cycle. The estimates contained in the listing represent the expert judgement of APPLIANCE magazine staff based on input obtained from many sources. We have indicated not only life cycle expectancy for each appliance category, but have extended the estimated number of units that will be eligible for replacement in 2005 and 2006. These appliances may be replaced with the same type product, an appliance of a different type, or not at all. To obtain this figure, we took the average life expectancy and used the unit shipments made that many years previously. Unit shipments are taken from APPLIANCE magazine’s Statistical Review, published annually for more than 50 years. The replacement numbers do not take into account changes in life expectancy over the years.

In most cases, there was very little variance between the figures provided by the various producers; consequently, we believe the data to be well-weighted figures.

Bear in mind that these figures represent the percentage of U.S. households with one particular type of appliance, and do not reflect households with more than one of a particular appliance.
