The PY1105CK Super Wide Angle SMT LED from Stanley Electric Sales of America (Irvine, CA, U.S.) is said to offer superior backlighting for keypads and switches in a variety of appliance applications.

According to Tony Abe, electrical engineer, the PY1105CK LED features a bright GaP (Gallium-Phosphorus) die and an advanced new lens design, which offers a wide 180-degree spatial distribution or viewing angle. “The combination of the GaP die and the new lens design’s viewing angle ensures superior backlighting ,” Mr. Abe tells APPLIANCE. “High-quality lighting with the PY1105CK LED is both visually appealing and ergonomically necessary to create highly functional membrane switches, displays, and indicators in appliance products.”

Having a wide, 180-degree viewing angle in a miniature surface mount LED design is an important engineering achievement, Mr. Abe adds. “It features a typical luminous intensity of up to 8.0 mcd (milli candelas), which is exceptional in a 1.6- x 1.25-mm package, with a height of only 0.5 mm above the circuit board, which allows the design engineer to design a very thin finished product,” he explains.

LEDs that offer a spatial distribution less than 180 degrees, and, depending on other design and construction factors, can often result in reduced brightness and luminous intensity, Mr. Abe continues. “This can make a product look dull and lifeless,” he says.

The new LED is also said to bring manufacturers cost savings, as the wide viewing angle and additional luminescence reduces the number of LEDs necessary for a particular function. “This inevitably reduces the volume of components and total cost,” Mr. Abe says. “Reducing inspection and rework of printed circuit boards in appliances also brings down total manufactured cost and total lifecycle costs as well.”

Decreasing the number of LEDs also reduces Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) for the finished product, Mr. Abe adds, as less components means less factors that can lead to a product’s failure.

The PY1105CK can be used in several appliance applications, including microwaves, washing machines, and dryers. It is available in yellow-green (with a dominant wavelength of 572 nm) and features a typical luminous intensity of up to 8.0 mcd @ 10 mA. Forward voltage is typically 2.1 V and is available up to a maximum of 2.8 V. Operating temperature is -40°C to +85°C . The company also plans to offer the LED in yellow (590 nm), orange (605 nm), and red (626 nm) colors in the near future.

The PY1105CK LED from Stanley Electric can be used for backlighting in membrane switches as well as a wide range of displays and indicators used in appliances.
