India’s energy savings from Star-rated air-conditioners and refrigerators are beginning to add up.
Star-labeled appliance sales figures and resulting energy savings in India were reported in Verified Energy Savings Related with the Activities of Bureau of Energy Efficiency for the year 2008-09.
The report was published in July by the National Productivity Council,
which is allied with India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
Star-labeled air-conditioner sales in the year were reported to be
656,127 units. Indian consumers clearly gravitate to the less
efficient, less expensive air conditioners. Sales by Star-rating were:
- 1 Star: 94,988 units
- 2 Star: 370,531 units
- 3 Star: 162,848 units
- 4 Star: 21,823 units
- 5 Star: 5,937 units
report estimates energy savings due to Star labeled air-conditioners at
368.9 MU, with a corresponding reduction in avoided generation capacity
of 305.47 MW.
Sales of Star-labeled refrigerators were:
- 1 Star: 0 units
- 2 Star: 4659 units
- 3 Star: 604,046 units
- 4 Star: 3,646,241 units
- 5 Star: 58,955 units
total of 4,313,901 Star-labeled refrigerators were sold, for an
estimated energy savings of 1602.70 MUs of electricity. The
