The Canadian Appliance Manufacturers Association (CAMA), an Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) council, announced latest market research for the Canadian Appliance industry in its published report, Major Appliance Industry Trends & Forecast.

The Canadian Appliance Manufacturers Association (CAMA), an Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) council, announced latest market research for the Canadian Appliance industry in its published report, Major Appliance Industry Trends & Forecast. In 2008, CAMA calls for an increase of 3.7% for the five core white goods products. Shipments to the retail channel are expected to reach 4.532 million for the five core products, however the builder channel is expected to remain flat at 652,000 for 2008. Laundry products are expected to lead the way in growth for 2008, with a forecasted growth of 4.6% for washers and 5.4% for dryers.

Looking forward, CAMA is forecasting a growth of approximately 3.0% for the five core products over the 2009-2010 forecast period, with some growth in the retail channel, but a negative forecast in builder channel as housing construction activity eases off.

“This past year was an encouraging one for the major appliance industry,” said Larry Moore, vice president, CAMA. All products experienced unit volume increases, with the five core white goods products increasing by 5.3% over 2006. Dishwashers experienced the strongest growth, with increases of 11.5% over the previous year. The retail channel was up by 6.1% on the five core products, while the builder channel slowed down, posting a slight decrease of -0.2%.

Separately, sales of digital cameras and televisions in Canada were strong in 2007, with growth predicted in 2008. The report, 2008 Consumer Electronics Market Trends and Forecast, by the Consumer Electronics Marketers of Canada (CEMC), an Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) council, and the Canadian Imaging Trade Association (CITA), reveals the rise in sales of digital cameras was up almost 25% in 2007 over the previous year, with manufacturers shipping almost 3.8 million digital cameras to Canadian retailers. The sale of digital cameras in 2008 is projected to increase to 3,952 units.

In the Canadian television market, CEMC reported 2007 as a solid year of growth for television shipments in Canada. Sales surpassed the 3 million mark in 2007, an increase of 2% from 2006 levels. Over the past three years, the sale of Flat Panel Plasma and LCD Televisions have grown to account for 69% of the total television sales market (2007), drastically up from a mere 6% back in 2004. The 2008 forecast has been pegged at 83% of the total televisions shipped in Canada. Flat Panel shipments surpassed the 2 million mark in 2007, finishing at 2,098,000 units. CEMC's Flat Panel forecast for 2008 is 2,750,000, a 31% increase over previous year.
