APPLIANCE presents a statistical snapshot of the geographic sectors of the global appliance industry. |
The global appliance industry’s size, using a broad definition that includes consumer electronics, computers and other business machines, HVAC, and commercial equipment, is difficult to calculate. The approximately 100 top global companies in World Appliance Companies 4th Edition had combined sales revenues of more than US$900 billion in 2005. In the core major home appliance industry in the United States, the world’s largest market, manufacturers’ shipments in 2005 were valued at $20.2 billion, up 8% from 2004.
Based on a sample of core major appliances, the U.S. market showed significant volume growth, with unit shipments up more than 20% between 2002 and 2005. This growth came from the consumer sector’s strength during the period, as well the tendency for consumers to spend more on homes, including remodeling and upgrading appliances.
In Europe these life-style trends were present but hampered by a weaker economy in the 2001–2005 period. Core appliance shipment growth for Europe was half that of the United States. In some euro-area economies the growth was especially slow, while emerging eastern markets showed strong growth.
