Adding Value

by Lisa Bonnema, editor, APPLIANCE—European Edition

If there is one thing the appliance industry has learned over the years, it is the importance of value. Without it, products become meaningless, and customer relationships are broken.

Adding value means taking a close look at your product, determining whether or not it meets current needs—and if it is innovative enough to meet future needs. It means listening to your customers and making changes to simplify their lives, all the while offering a service no one else can.
We at APPLIANCE can relate. While we certainly don’t sell appliances, we do understand the importance of value. Our job is to ensure that every word you read in this magazine is useful and makes your job a little easier.
Endeavoring to keep that promise, we have made a few changes to the magazine that we hope will not only add value, but build a stronger relationship with you, the reader.
The first major change you will notice is that the entire magazine is now printed in English. While previous editions had our News section and feature article summaries translated into French, German and Italian, it was brought to our attention that a one-language approach might better serve our readers. An e-mail reader survey revealed that many of you feel English is an acceptable, universal language, especially if it means you will receive additional information. I personally want to thank all of you who took the time to participate in the survey, and I am pleased to say that we took your advice.
As you will notice on page 3, we have expanded our News section to three pages, double the size of our previous editions. In addition to providing the latest appliance industry news, we have added a Newsbriefs section that gives you important updates on your suppliers. We are also publishing an exclusive On Location report from our European correspondent, who reports on emerging industry trends and issues and gives first-hand information from regional trade fairs.
Feature articles will be published in new and expanded formats to make articles more readable and interesting. Future issues will include one-on-one interviews with key European appliance executives you won’t read anywhere else.
Of course, these changes are in addition to the content you have come to expect from the magazine. You can still read about the latest engineering achievements and research in our Appliance Engineer® section, and hear from industry experts in our Guest Editorial section. We will also continue to provide you with pages of information on innovative appliance components in New Products and literature updates in New Literature.
Our hope is that you do in fact find value in the new and improved version of APPLIANCE—European Edition. And, just as important, that you continue to tell us what we can do to make this magazine even better. Please e-mail me with any comments and suggestions at lisa@appliance.com. I look forward to hearing from you!
