Tim Daudelin of Seaga Manufacturing, Inc.

Continuous education is an important goal for Tim Daudelin, purchasing manager for Seaga Manufacturing, a global maker of vending machines and refrigerated coolers, of Freeport, Illinois, U.S., especially since his educational background is not related to his career. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, U.S. and went on to obtain his Masters degree in history in 1988.
“Any chance that arises to learn something new I tend to take advantage of, especially since my academic training had nothing whatsoever to do with business,” Daudelin tells APPLIANCE.
Currently, his responsibilities as purchasing manager include all domestic purchasing, sourcing, contract negotiations, and international logistics. He has also started to source materials and parts for the company’s overseas facility in India. “As I have only been at Seaga for a couple of months, I’m still learning the industry and the ins and outs of the company,” Daudelin says. “It is challenging, but fun at the same time.”
Daudelin began his career with Champion Spark Plug—Cooper Industries located in Burlington, Iowa, U.S. from 1989 to 1995. He started as a stockroom clerk and eventually became the purchasing/tooling coordinator. From 1995 to 2001, he worked as a purchasing agent/tool crib supervisor at NTN Bower Corp. in Macomb, Illinois, U.S. Then he moved on to Lamont Industries in Burlington, Iowa, U.S. from 2003 to 2005 as the costing/purchasing/logistics manager. Throughout most of his career, he worked also as a history instructor at Southeastern Community College in Burlington.
His lack of business background was one challenge that he faced early on in his extensive career. He had to learn quickly and looked to advice from others in the industry. “I took seminars, studied on my own and absorbed information from all my contacts and co-workers,” he says. “Never be afraid to ask smart questions and then actually listen to the person helping you.”
Listening and learning from those in the industry both inside and outside the company has proved to be one of Daudelin’s most valuable experiences. He feels it is important to listen to what people have to say and include that in what he feels is right. “Working with people in your own company is key to any business’ success, and working well with people makes it enjoyable and more rewarding for you and them.”
Daudelin has taken this valuable method of inclusion and affiliation and applied it as his management style. He tries to get everyone to cooperate and make sure they stay involved with the task at hand.
As he looks to the future with the company, he acknowledges the challenge of understanding the international business of the company. “With that in mind, my goals will be to obviously lower costs and develop better relationships with our suppliers,” he says.
While he is not hard at work in the office, Daudelin enjoys traveling, music, working outside doing landscaping, and fixing up his house. “I enjoy waterskiing, sports and watching my sons participate in sports,” he tells APPLIANCE. “I also tend to find time to help my wife Kim with many of her duties as director of marketing and fund development for a large retirement community.”
