Sticking It In Place
Delhi was having trouble getting its insulation to stay where it was supposed to.
Delhi Industries (Delhi, Ontario, Canada) makes industrial fans and blower units used in the HVAC systems of large buildings and factories. The company installs insulation panels on all interior blower cabinet walls.
The installation method involved peeling off a release paper to reveal a pre-applied solvent-based adhesive. The insulation was then applied to the cabinet and rolled with consistent pressure.
This method required the operators to sometimes use a strong-smelling, solvent-based aerosol adhesive to correct areas of insulation that did not adhere well. Poor bond might be caused when the release paper peeled back during shipping or warehousing, allowing the adhesive to dry prematurely.
To eliminate the use of the strong-smelling aerosol adhesives, the company changed to low-odor Loctite Hysol Spraypac 0450 hot melt adhesive from Henkel Corporation (Rocky Hill, Connecticut, U.S.). The company used the Loctite Hysol 175 spray applicator because of its portability and compact design. The operator sprays the adhesive on the insulation, and then places the sprayed insulation in the cabinet. The operator uses a roller to ensure cabinet contact.
The adhesive has eliminated the need for insulation rework in the manufacturing process, as well as eliminating the scrap generated from the old peel and stick backing.
