by Fred A. Brown, president and chairman of the Board of Directors,Electrical Manufacturing & Coil Winding Association, Inc

On October 19-22, 2005, an event is taking place at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, IN, U.S. that can have a dramatic effect on your career and the products manufactured by your employer.

Manufacturing Expo (EME) will feature displays by more than 200 companies featuring the latest equipment and materials used in manufacturing electrical products. This unique conference is organized by the Insulation and Dielectric Society of the Institute of Electrical/Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Insulation Division and Magnet Wire Section of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), and the Electrical Manufacturing & Coil Winding Association (EMCWA).

The combined EIC/EME Conference will feature presentations by more than 100 authors as they discuss emerging technologies in the fields of insulation materials, magnet wire, motor drive systems, servomechanisms, transformer and inductor design and manufacturing, winding innovations, ultracapacitors, and a whole lot more. In addition, seven short courses are being offered on subjects related to the design and manufacturing of electrical products.

The conference keynote address will be given by Dr. Ron Hira, noted author of the book, Outsourcing America. Dr. Hira is an assistant professor of Public Policy at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he specializes in engineering workforce issues and technology policy. He is a recognized expert on offshore outsourcing and has testified before the U.S. Congress twice on its implications. A full conference listing and registration form may be found at www.eic-emexpo.org.

Featured speaker at the EIC Golden Omega Award Banquet will be John Riley, chairman of the board of directors of Cooper Industries. Mr. Riley will be the 2005 recipient of the prestigious EIC Golden Omega Award, which is given to those in the industry that have made significant contributions to technological advancement.

Co-located with the EIC/EM Expo are the 2005 Magnetics Conference and the Equipment Protection Conference, both presented by WebCom Communications. The Magnetics Conference discusses advancements in magnetic materials, as well as the latest business, technical innovations, and application developments in the worldwide magnetics market. Check it out at www.magneticsmagazine.com. The Equipment Protection Conference provides an opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in protecting electrical and electronic products, equipment, instruments, and systems.

Other co-located activities include three courses—“Basic Motor Theory,” “Fundamentals of PolyPhase Induction Motor Design,” and “Fundamentals of Universal Electric Motor Design”—offered by SMMA, the association for electric motors, their control, and applications.

In addition, the Association of International Motion Engineers (AIME) will present course sessions covering motion control fundamentals, design, and motor issues. For information, visit the AIME web site at www.aime.net.

The EIC/EME provides a unique opportunity to interface with experts in the fields of design and manufacturing of all types of electrical devices. So if your appliance incorporates any type of electrical device, this is the one event you will want to attend. For more information, call 619/435-3629.
