Saia-Burgess USA Inc.’s new URG1 series stepper motors reportedly offer precise operation at up to 2,500 steps per second.

The URG1 series stepper motors from Saia-Burgess USA are 13-mm in diameter and 11-mm in length. Because of their compact size, the motors are said to be ideal for mobile applications such as hand-held medical devices.

Just 13-mm in diameter and 11-mm in length, the miniature stepper motors are said to be ideal for mobile and battery operations. The motors are IP40-rated, weigh less that 7g, and can operate in temperatures ranging from -20°C to +60°C.

The URG1 series stepper motors can be used in applications such as microscopes, cameras, and light beamers for controlling optical positioning, driving paper feeds in printers and paper strip dispensers, and medical dispensation in hand-held testing and dispensing medical devices. In addition, because of their low power consumption and compact size, the motors are said to provide reliable operation for lower duty cycle applications.

The company says it has improved the design of the stepper motors by including the stator claw poles into the outer motor housing for an optimized magnetic flux transmission. The improved bobbin materials used in the motors allows support for the additional three stators as well as the shaft.

“By reducing the overall size of the motor, we anticipate customers being able…to reduce their overall package size,” Art Swiersz, product manager for Saia-Burgess (Vernon Hills, IL, U.S.) says. According to Mr. Swiersz, the 13-mm motor is designed as a low-cost, high-quality solution for customer actuation needs. It is also produced on a fully automated line with components sourced from low-cost centers.

Equipped with a neodymium magnet for high magnetic strength, the motor’s rotor dimensions have also been designed for low moments of inertia. In addition, the URG1 is said to offer high flexibility in mechanical connections, and the motor flange can be customized according to the mechanical or electrical specifications of the application. Electrical connections can be attained either by pins or a flexible circuit print connection.
