Endicott Research Group is offering a family of DC-AC inverters that feature a vacuum-encapsulated design to ensure cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) ignition.

The inverters power CCFL-backlit LCDs for products such as medical appliances. The vacuum-encapsulated design was created to provide resistance to shock, vibration and humidity. “The basic building block is a printed circuit board (PCB) with componentry much like an open frame inverter,” explains Tom Novitsky, engineering manager. “A plastic case was developed to house the inverter and various potting materials were researched for manufacturability and reliability.”

According to the company, its E200II and SE/SE2 Series inverters provide an ideal solution of CCFL-backlit flat panel displays where compact size and reliability of the power source are important. The inverters work at high efficiencies of 80 to 85 percent and are also tested and designed using the actual LCD display assembly to make sure the systems are compatible.

The manner of encapsulation leaves the pins exposed, making the bottom of the PCB considered to be high voltage. This makes the inverters useful for embedded designs such as medical diagnostic equipment.
The E200II can power one or two CCFLs with 8 W of output power, and dimming options are available. The SE Series can provide up to 5 W of output power for single CCFL backlights and the SE2 is for two-lamp configurations. The SE/SE2 are 10.66 mm high by 19.1 mm wide by 75.7 mm long. This series also offers external pulse width moldulation dimming.

The company points out that its magnetics are self-shielding to minimize EMI and RFI interference. Self-shielding is achieved by using a transformer design in which the core surrounds the transformer windings.

The series of inverters are beneficial to designers and engineers, according to the company. Novitsky says, “These inverters are PCB-mountable and can be run through wave solder processes, and therefore should require less hands-on manufacturing time.
