The JW Series of switches from NKK Switches are said to be the first molded rocker switches to feature TV ratings. This, according to the supplier, allows the switch to withstand a high inrush of current and makes the product ideal for use in a variety of applications, including consumer electronics, commercial foodservice equipment, and industrial appliances.

The JW Series is certified for TV-5 and TV-8 ratings, which allow the switches to handle a high amount of initial current. According to the supplier, the switch capabilities exceed a 160-A inrush load. The switches are also UL-, CSA-, and VDE-approved, and have a flammability rating of UL94V-0. The devices are rated at 16 A @ 125/250 V a.c. and feature a rating of 5 A @ 72 V d.c. for telecommunication applications for a power distribution switch. The supplier says engineers can configure the switch to SPST, SPDT, DPST, or DPDT circuits.

The company also incorporated a protective element into its switch design, as the switch is designed to break light contact welds. This construction, according to Bob Wanless, product specialist at NKK, allows the switch to handle a high inrush of current, allowing the TV ratings. “With such a high inrush, for such a fast amount of time, there might be a light weld, and the way that the actuator mechanism is built, it could break these light contact welds if the contacts are welded together from the inrush. This switch is designed to withstand those or to break a light weld,” he tells APPLIANCE.

Available in two different sizes—medium and large—the switches also feature a dust-resistant internal field and a splash-proof cover option. Mr. Wanless says the splash-proof cover is a distinctive feature for rocker-type switches. “There are not many rocker switches that have a splash-proof cover on them,” he notes. “The JW Series of switches also have an extra field inside each device to prevent water or liquids into them.”

The switch is made to be dust-proof by way of an interior polyphenylene sulfide seal between the actuator and the contact area. It is also molded-in and epoxy-sealed to lock out flux, dust, and other contaminants.
